Shift Work
Tie Domi, with Jim Lang . Simon & Schuster Canada, $26.99 (228p) ISBN 978-1-4767-8250-8
Domi was one of hockey's greatest fighters. He was a locker room leader and made friends with a surprising number of high-profile people in and out of the game. This memoir reveals much about the man: his upbringing as the son of Albanian immigrants, beginnings in hockey and rise in the NHL, losses in the 2008 financial crisis, and pride in his three children, including NHL player Max. The insight into his fearless and driven personality helps readers understand the role of an on-ice enforcer. He writes that he always had to be ready "to do my job and assume the responsibility of protecting the people around me." Domi also knows how to pull his punches, especially when it comes to naming names. Who caused trouble in the Toronto Maple Leafs locker room? Domi won't tell. Though he talks about the effects of his divorce, he doesn't say why his marriage collapsed. What he does say is entertaining and fun, but tough guy Domi chooses to share his life lessons rather than indulging in a nasty tell-all. Few who faced his fists would argue with him. Agent: Brian J.Wood. (Nov.)
